Two bedrooms, a kitchen-diner and a full bathroom. Renovated with the original beams kept, which are the first thing you see on the way up.
The apartment
A whole apartment for four
It occupies the top floor of a stone building in the old centre of San Juan de Plan. Attic-pitched, with exposed beams and timber as the dominant material in floors, ceilings and joinery.
The living room faces the valley. Its windows look out over the wooded slopes, the river and the summits at the head of the valley; it is where most of the time ends up being spent.
Sleeps four. It works just as well for a week of walking or skiing as for a long stretch of remote work.

What to do
The Chistau valley
The valley ends beneath the Posets massif and carries no through traffic. That keeps it quiet even in August.

Hiking
Paths lead out of the old centre towards the stone barns and hay meadows, and many guests set off on foot straight from the door. The waymarked trails join a short way from the village. At the head of the valley stands the Posets massif, the second highest summit in the Pyrenees.

Skiing in winter
Cerler is under an hour away by car. On the far side of the Bielsa tunnel, in France, is Piau-Engaly. For cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, the valley floor holds snow for much of the winter.

The Bielsa tunnel connects with the French side. Saint-Lary and Arreau are a short drive away: towns with a weekly market and ski resorts of their own, reachable in a day.

Thermal spa
Balnéa, in Loudenvielle beyond the tunnel: open-air thermal baths in a mountain setting. An alternative for poor weather or after a long day walking.

Villages of stone and slate
San Juan de Plan, Plan, Gistaín and Saravillo follow one another within a few kilometres, their traditional slate architecture preserved.

Aínsa and the national park
Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park is a little over an hour away. Aínsa, with its medieval square and castle, about forty minutes.

Festivals and tradition
The Chistau carnival is one of the few in the Pyrenees to have kept its continuity through the twentieth century. It is held in February and is worth timing a visit around.

Ibón de Plan (Basa de la Mora)

A high mountain lake set in a cirque of meadows, facing the Cotiella massif. It is the best known walk in the valley. You drive as far as the car park and continue on foot.

Ibón del Sen

Less frequented than the Basa de la Mora. The route climbs by forest track and woodland to a small tarn.

Refugio de Viadós

At the head of the valley, beneath the Posets massif. The starting point for the main ascents in the area.
Eating, and everything else
The valley is at the end of the road, but you are not cut off: there is a restaurant, bread, a shop and a pharmacy without driving anywhere serious.
