The house

The apartment
A whole apartment for four
It is on the top floor of a stone building in the old centre of San Juan de Plan. Attic-pitched, with exposed beams and timber as the dominant material: floors, ceilings and joinery. Access is by stairs; there is no lift.
The living room faces the valley. It is why people come back: you eat breakfast watching the mist slide down the hillside, and dinner watching the light go out over the crags.
It fits a family of four or two couples. It works just as well for a week of hiking as for ten days of remote work with nobody bothering you.

What to do
A valley you don't pass through
Chistau sits at the end of the road. You don't cross it on the way somewhere else: you come to it. That's why it's still quiet in August.

Walks that leave from the village
Paths head out of the old centre towards the stone barns and the hay meadows. The waymarked trails do not start at the door of the building: you walk up a little to join them. At the head of the valley stands the Posets massif, the second highest summit in the Pyrenees.

Skiing in winter
Cerler is under an hour by car. And through the Bielsa tunnel, Piau-Engaly, on the French side. For cross-country or snowshoeing you don’t even need that: the valley floor fills with snow.

France, through the Bielsa tunnel
The Bielsa tunnel crosses to the far side of the Pyrenees and puts Saint-Lary and Arreau within an easy drive: market towns, mountain streets and ski resorts of their own. You can go and come back in a day without rushing.

A day at the spa
Balnéa, in Loudenvielle just past the tunnel: open-air thermal baths ringed by mountains. The plan for a rainy day, or the one your legs will thank you for after a long walk.

Villages of stone and slate
San Juan de Plan, Plan, Gistaín and Saravillo: four villages within a handful of kilometres, their slate-roofed architecture intact and none of them turned into a shop window.

Aínsa and the national park
Ordesa y Monte Perdido is a little over an hour away. Aínsa, with its medieval square and its castle above the meeting of two rivers, about forty minutes.

Festivals that never died out
The Chistau carnival is one of the few in the Pyrenees that was never entirely lost. If you come in February, don’t miss it.

Remote work that actually works
Stable Wi-Fi, a table by the window, and a village where you don’t hear a car after ten at night. Several guests stay for weeks.

Ibón de Plan (Basa de la Mora)
Distance and ascent: check them on Wikiloc
The valley’s high mountain lake, in a cirque of meadows with the Cotiella massif opposite. It is the walk everyone does, and rightly so. You drive to the car park and set off from there.

Ibón del Sen

Quieter than the Basa de la Mora and far less busy. It climbs by forest track and woodland to a small tarn tucked between rock walls.

Refugio de Viadós

Up the valley to its head, under the Posets massif. The starting point for the big ascents and, in itself, one of the finest corners of the Aragonese Pyrenees.
Eating, and everything else
The valley is at the end of the road, but you are not cut off: there is a restaurant, bread, a shop and a pharmacy without driving anywhere serious.
